Welcome! Today is day number 5 of the Henry Glass Jolly Holiday Party and that means I'm one of the featured designers.
My free pattern is for this little, make it in an evening apron. The piece work is inspired by and constructed in the style of Seminole patchwork. My goal was to use what I had on hand and to make it in an evening. I used mostly my fabrics from my previous collections. (And a little Kaffe just for fun!)
The other featured Designer today is the talented and sweet Leanne Anderson from The Whole Country Caboodle
Be sure to look for the secret words on each of our blogs and post them on the final day of the hop, on the Henry Glass Blog!
We were each asked to answer some questions about our holiday traditions and memories so here is my story -
Favorite holiday food? I LOVE candycanes in hot chocolate, especially in front of the lit Christmas tree at dusk, when the light is magical. ( wait, candycanes are a food, right? )
Traditions? A favorite tradition from my childhood was my Mom taking us to downtown Hudson's in Detroit where they always had a fantastic North Pole staged on the mezzanine, complete with a beautiful Santa and huge candycanes, covered with glitter. I was always in awe of the props, especially the moving elves! A little scarry, yes, but in a good way. Elves still scare me a little.
Favorite gifts? One year I desperately wanted a beautiful baby doll I had seen at Hudsons. Even though I was about 13 years old, I still loved beautiful dolls. I figured my Mom would think I was too old for a baby doll and I worked myself into a pity party, only to find her under the tree on Christmas morning. I named her Mike, after a boy I had a huge crush on! And a favorite gift from around 12 years to 16 or so - I always asked for and received a tiny little bottle of Channel no. 5. So, I would play with "Mike" while wearing the most sophistacted Parisian parfume! (those early teen years are so mixed up!)
Holiday song? I love all the traditional songs we sang in church. My mom was the pianist so was always practicing. I used to love to sing along. My brothers didn't like that at all. I guess my favorite has always been Silent Night. Each Christmas the children in our church would wear our nice Christmas outfits and sing for the congregation, which was only around 350 or so people. Then after the service, they passed out little boxes of candy to everyone! There was always a variety including both red and green candycanes. Adding to the excitement of the little choral event was my dress! My mom was a wonderfully creative sewer who made me beautiful ( and I do mean beautiful! ) Christmas dresses. One year, it was purple crushed velvet with a white satin sash at the dropped waist. It was finished with a beautiful bow and white satin cuffs with rhinestone buttons. I felt like a movie star!
I hope you have fun with this apron pattern! Thanks for stopping by!
I still have one of my grandmother's aprons made from a feedsack. Aprons are one of my favorite's..thanks

If I made an apron would it excuse me from the cooking?

Thanks for the pattern. I love how your favorite food has to be eaten under certain conditions. And candycanes sound great in hot chocolate by the lit Christmas tree at dusk. I also think a fire in the fireplace would really add to the flavor. :)

Loved your post. You painted such a beautiful picture of your Christmases. I was also a baby doll lover. I still have 3 of my favorites. I saw one in Costco this week and wondered if hubby would buy me a doll for Christmas!

I love aprons and have passed that to my girls. My mother doesn't get it but we all love to wear them while we cook. It's always extra fun to have a special one for the holidays. Thanks!

Thanks for the apron pattern! I love the strip technique. My Christmas memories include a visit to Santa's Workshop & North Pole at Gimbels Department Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Great memories.
