aaah...Sunday evening on the porch

Closeup Detail- "Magnolia" by Brenda Pinnick 6/22/08 pastel on board

I just love sitting on my front porch, just as the sun is lowering into the sky ahead of me. And if it's a Sunday evening, all the better. The dishes are done, the gang is fed, laundry folded and it's just so relaxing. I've decided that I'm going to take over the "dining room", which is a misnomer because we have never used it for such. It's too small and boxy to work for dining unless it's dining for two, which at our house, usually happens on t.v. trays in the living room, watching reruns of "Everybody loves Raymond". Geeesh, we're so predictable.

Anyway, the little boxy room at the front of the house will now be my painting studio, seperate and distinct from the office/papercrafting/whatever room downstairs in the basement. I've found that if/when I try to make art/paintings downstairs, I get caught up in all the other stuff that "needs" doing; project samples, email responses, etc. and then before I know it, I've spent way too much time tending to stuff that prevents me from making art. And, after spending too much time in the basement, I begin to feel isolated and very claustrophobic.
Here's a little painting I did last evening while sitting out on the porch. All the magnolia trees are blooming now and I just felt the urge to pay a little homage to the Southern flower. I didn't use a reference, just drew from memory for the purposes of creative expression, not factual accuracy. I just love pastels, they are so immediate. Here, I've used a pastel board made by Ampersand. It's actually a wet/dry board allowing you to paint first and then top it with pastel. DSC00640

lunch, anyone?

Here is a close-up, cropped section from one of my paintings in the "spatial fantasy" series, done a few years ago. I just wanted to brighten up your day with a little "eye-candy". I wanted to be a cartoonist when I was little, does it show??? LOL.

moooooove outta my way

someday, I'm going to buy a farmhouse, have some beautiful animals and a flower garden to paint. I'll set my easel up outdoors, wear my paint clothes and no bra. I won't be checking my emails or worry about deadlines. The cows will be my friends.

Sound like someone who's real close to serious burn out? Good thing I have a trip coming up next week. I'm actually looking forward to sitting on the plane for 7 hours! I'm going to read, sip a glass or two of wine, and then lights out before our big QVC meeting. I appreciate being "unconnected" while in the air.
Have a nice weekend, friends.

2 hour painting

Is it art? Is it craft? Is it fun? Yes to all. Is it cheating? NO.
visit my painting blog for the low down and step outs. If you've always wanted to paint but were intimidated, this process will get you going! Creating like this is a great way to learn how to mix color, plan a composition, and to experiment with brushes.

and on another note:
I really struggle with my hair. This may not seem important to you, but it just keeps getting worse and worse. It's crazy hair...has been my whole life. Sticks out in all directions.
Today, I went and let loose of some serious bank at the hair salon. Cut, highlights, lowlights, etc.
I come home and my son says to me, "Oh, did you decide to get another one of those Dr. Suess haircuts?"
HUH???!! This would be darn cute if he wasn't 32 years old and quite astute. .....heavy sigh.

the good news is...

What a beautiful weekend it was in Michigan. WOW! Perfect autumn weather...sunshine, blue skies, warm enough for shirt sleeves at times. Color was perfect...just before the "peak" when everything is red/orange/yelllow. I like it when there's still lots of green in the mix, it makes the reds seem so much more brilliant. There was a gusty wind which made painting a bit of a challenge due to paint drying out quickly, having to stop to hold everything down or run to pick up stuff, but we managed fine. Time went so fast, we just blinked and the day was almost over. That's the way it is when your in you "zone"....totally relaxed and having fun!
Here are some pics.

Okay, true to my neverending expectations I tend to put on myself....I managed 50 paintings instead of the 100 goal I had set. If we had gotten out and set up earlier than noon or so, I could have done it. But, sometimes a little extra sleep is necessary on a weekend following a really busy work week which includes travel. It was a good day in spite of not meeting my piece count goal. What I DID end up with is some really good color combinations and little sketches for some larger works! So I DID meet that goal. In looking at some of the paintings, many would make a really good "recipe template" for a scrapbook page! So, I'm happy with the results.

On another subject *******************

I'm very appreciative of Ellison/Sizzix for their commitment to spotlighting their artists and making sure their customers get to know the artist's behind the product. From my dealings with them, this is a company to watch. They are moving in such a wonderful direction! And what nice people they are, which I get so excited about! For anyone coming to CHA for the winter show, please stop by their booth and say hello to me. I'll be there meeting people and showing off our new line of products!

100 little paintings, all in a day's work

I'm traveling later this week to spend brainstorming time with one of my manufacturers. As a result , I'm able to also spend a day with my brother-in-law, Matt. He's a graphic designer and an artist. He and I are going to spend all day Saturday together, just painting! I'm so excited!!!

Anyway, in thinking about my previous post, I am setting forth the challenge to myself and to him...100 little paintings in one day. Yep, that's right...each of us! They don't have to be masterpieces, just explorations in color, form, texture, pattern and lines. I'm guessing that out of those 100 little paintings, I'll get a few that I just love and decide to make into large works. (He doesn't know about this yet, so shhhh.)

Here's the plan, I've got a bunch of leftover acid-free boards from when I was making prints and selling them a few years back. I'm going to cut to size and gesso them up for us to use as substrates. I don't know if we'll be painting outdoors or inside, it will be determined by the elements. It's up north, so we should have wonderful autumn colors to inspire us. But, this means we could also have some cold, wet, windy weather to deal with too. Anyway, I'll post them next week so be sure to check back.

I'm remembering one of my design classes with the much dreaded but loved teacher, Sylvia. Our first assignment in her class was to bring back 100 concepts/sketchs based on one animal. My animal was a Llamma. I drew that Llamma everyway immaginable! Out of those 100 sketchs, I had several on which to base my final project, a cut paper poster.
What a great excercise! So, as painful as that first experience was, it taught me that it really comes down to the "law of averages". **************so, for anyone who is feeling intimidated by creativity, I challenge you to dive in and create a hundred whatevers and I'm sure there will be a masterpiece in there somewhere. Oh, and I REALLY want to see it!

I love comments from old friends and new friends. Please let me know that I'm not just talking to myself...please?
Thanks Helen for your continued enthusiasm and your relentless dedication to all things crafting in the U.K. !

And, finally, word is, the big 8 k Holiday Papercrafting kit is finally airing tomorrow on QVC.U.K, along with the original, everyday kit! Wish I could be there, Rosemary Merry is presenting it and she does fantastic projects as well as a wonderful job of presenting on air, which can't be easy.

Okay, back to Halloween...now HOW MANY WAYS can I draw a pumpkin....I think I've done them all.

Painting time

Finished
Click here to see the photoalbum showing the painting process. Then, click on each thumbnail to read about the process.
I had to get off the computer yesterday and work with real paint. Geez I miss this. The mess, the brushes, the spontanaity of mishaps and no "command z" to instantly undo something. Working in real paint creates an opportunity to "solve the puzzle" so to speak. On the computer, it's very easy to start over in a new direction if you think that something's not working. With a painting, you've invested not only your time, but acutal paint and physical application into the work. It's the challenge of "making it work" that I find satisfying. I think that this aspect of creating is sometimes lost when you only work on a computer. I'm so glad that many graphic design schools are going back to insisting on doing hand work, using art materials and thinking the project through by working in sketch books. I'm lucky to have studied both, fine art and design. When I create art, my design knowledge always come through and in my design process, my education in fine art is an advantage that I use daily.

OK, back to work...I'm working on Halloween art this week. It doesn't often happen that you get to design for the season/holiday that is currently happening. Usually, it's Christmas in July, etc.
