waaa, waaa, waaaa...

earlier today I was whining about having to run my errands myself and some boohooing about not having "staff". Ha, next time I do that, just tell me to shut up, will ya? geeesh. While driving to the post office, I realized that it's not the actual "running of errands" that bothers me, it's the interruption to the creative process that I resent. It's when you're "in the flow" so to speak and things are coming together, almost like magic. Then WHAM! you remember all the "running the business" type stuff that needs doing today and there goes the creative process. It's having to switch over to the left brain that's so hard to do sometimes.
Well, serendipity intervenes and I found myself right next door to one of my favorite indulgences. No, not chocolate, although that's another, and no, not the wine store either. I'm talking about the GOODWILL store...yaaaaaa! Heck, I'll do my part to save the planet...I'll find new uses for cast-offs and orphans....and for just $3.00, I found THESE!!!

BRAND SPANKIN NEW! And anyone who knows me knows that one of my mantras is "never enough red shoes". So today, I learned a little lesson. Do your own chores and you will be rewarded. OK, I just made that up, but, it's good to keep in mind when you start boohooing about having to drive to the post office. Maybe there's chocolate, or wine, or RED SHOES to be discovered!

FBI warning

My husband laughs at me because I subscribe to the FBI newsletter. Well, ok, I do watch way too much Law and Order, CSI, etc. ANYWAY...check out today's message regarding the latest spyware / spam going around. It has to do with an order from the Grand Jury, so be warned and be careful, friends!

Check back here on Sunday, I'll have a freebie download for you. It's sweet!

Trend spotting in London

While in London last week, we had a chance to go out to do some trend research on Sloan Square, a very trendy area which sits on the edge of Chelsea. It'll be interesting to see if I see similar things in New York next month when we go to the Surtex and Stationery shows. Here are some pictures I took inside a store, (duh, didn't get the name of it) on the square. They were really accommodating when I asked permission to photograph, the manager quickly and without hesitation agreed. I explained that I'm on the trend team for CHA designer section, so maybe that's why.

I'll be posting more in the next few days so check back.

Here's a picture of Sloan Square and few other shots taken near our hotel, which is the former residence of the Vanderbilt family.
It was fun sitting in the lobby with our ($14.00) glass of house wine, pretending we WERE the Vanderbilts! LOL. We imagined the people scurrying about were our "help" and that the nearby dining room was being readied for us and our guests were we would dine on fine fare prepared precisely to our liking. It wasn't long before we were delivered the bill for our drinks and quickly catapulted into reality.( heavy sigh ). It was fun while it lasted!

How sad is this...

I looked around my studio today with a hopeless feeling of never, ever, ever getting it clean again. I suddenly remembered my photo album posted way back when, so I toured it again and enjoyed seeing my studio all cleaned up. Now I feel better. : )
I know...sad.

happy St. Patrick's day!

I'm so excited, I'm off to London in a couple of weeks and then, taking a little holiday in Ireland! I've never been to Ireland and am really looking forward to it! I've been too busy to do any research and I'm sure I'll be doing that at the last minute! We have some business to take care of at QVC and are going to do a little shopping at a fabulous ribbon and trim shop I did manage to locate.
I'm going to meet one of my new buddies while I'm there and she's going to join us at the ribbon shop. (I'll let her announce it to her friends.) Anyway, I do wish we had longer in London. I'd love to do some more trend shopping along Kings Road. I'm a huge fan of the Designer's Guild and visited their store on my last trip over. I thought I was going to break into tears! LOVE IT! and to see it for real, not just on the website or in a book, yummmmmy! Tricia Guild is one of my heros. Her color sense, her bold scale, her books, her business sense! I pretty much want to be her! CAN'T WAIT!!! I have to say, I've really earned a few days off.

I haven't forgotten about posting my project from the challenge "Bedizen" below. It's nearly done, the glue is drying! some times things just need time, like careers, ya know?!? There are so many talented designers in the world and I'm so lucky to have many artist and designer friends. We share with each other our victories, our challenges, our goals and aspirations. I have some specific goals that I had put in place way back when. One is to have a fabric line...I'm working on it and have some strong possibilities in place! I'll be so excited when this happens...(not if, but WHEN)...that's the key. Only positive thinking! I also have some specific goals for my paper product lines and my business and those are also in the works. I know they will happen, it's just a matter of WHEN!

And speaking of friends and heros, I have a special interview coming up later this week with one of my best buddies! She's a real inspiration and I know that you'll find her story interesting. Stay tuned......

designing in the crafting industry

Yesterday, I was involved in a lively discussion regarding the craft industry and the professional designers who work in the industry.
Much has changed in the past few years, with the onslaught of "design teams" and how this impacts the livihoods of professional designers. Companies have taken to USING their customers to promote their products, usually without payment, but instead offering "free" product (to use to promote the company), an (honorary?) place on the "design team" which requires x number of projects per week, x number of blog mentions, x number of forum chat about the said products and how marvelous they are. For this, the "Designer" (non-professional given a professional title) gets her 15 minutes of fame, justification for spending so much money on her supplies and craftroom, you get the idea. At first, this seemed like a good idea. I mean, who doesn't want free stuff, recognition for her creative genious, and an obligation to spend time crafting away? My opinion is this...if your work is good enough to be published, you should be getting paid. simple. Contests and the like are fine if the "prize" is truly an award for outstanding work and takes the form of real money. What's happening is that manufacturers are holding "contests" for projects, using their products. What's wrong with this is that really, the only "winner" is the company who gets 50 or so projects "submittted" and then uses these projects to fill their trade show booth instead of paying working, professional designers who contribute so much to the crafting industry.

What is now required to get published is this: use products that are advertised in the magazines, only the newest product from big manufacturers, use only photos of cute kids or animals. There are of course exceptions, but this is the current norm.

I think that anyone with a true creative vision, a passion for crafting, and a great design should have an opportunity to work in the crafting industry and GET PAID. These opportunities will exist when people quit givng their work away.

I'm re-reading one of my favorite books, ORBITING THE GIANT HAIRBALL by Gordon MacKenzie. The subtitle is" A Corporate fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace". He worked for Hallmark for 30 years and recounts his experiences working as a creative in a corporate structure. I also worked for Hallmark, only a year, so I have a little bit of insight into his life from inside the walls. I've also worked as an in-house designer for a major craft company which is why I have so much respect for people who do have to deal with corporate stuff on a daily basis and still manage to put out amazing, creative work. The in-house, behind the scenes artists and designers often go unrecognized. I'm so glad that Sizzix gives attribution to their team, they deserve much praise! I just don't understand the thinking of corporations or manufacturers when they keep the designers hidden away. If they were smart, they'd lift them way up, make them highly visible, include them in the sales meetings and brag about them. Anyway, here's a picture of the book, it's a very fun little gem with comical illustrations, insight and wisdom.

Help for stray animals

My friend Claudine Hellmuth wrote and asked me to help her spread the word about something that I feel is very worthwhile. She wrote the following;

"I am trying to help my friend Bernie Berlin who has a non-profit (501c3) Animal Rescue that she runs all by herself. Last year alone she saved 500 puppies and kittens from death and placed them all in new homes by networking with other shelters.

ANYWAY, we are trying to help her win a grant of $50,000!!! And we are very close, but we need help spreading the word.

To win she needs to most amount of individual $10 donations (each donation must be from a different person to count for the grant) possible before Jan 31st. Her badge is #4 right now in the top ten badges but she needs stay in the top 4 to win the grant. and the other badges are catching up.

She is also giving away a 16x20 artwork to one donor who will be drawn at random. More info on her blog here.

Tim Holtz is giving away a fantastic artpiece also, so you may want to give multiple times to increase your chance of winning! visit Tim Holtz to see w hat he's giving away.

here is the link to Bernie Berlin who runs the shelter. visit Bernie
AND....
I'm also going to join in on the give-a-way. I'm donating a mixed media painting, (yet to be created) of any animal of your choosing! (If you like cows, see below!) Ok, no snakes. I just can't look at snakes, not even if they're created with paint.
*IMPORTANT: when making your donation, please be sure to include your contact information and then enter the name "bpinnick" on the line that says "dedication or gift" this will enter you into the drawing...

they do take paypal which makes giving easy!

add on: 7:45 p.m.
I just had to share this picture of my buddy Nugget. He immediately climbed into this shipping box that I layed on the floor. He LOVES the packing peanuts and he sees it as a personal challenge to try to fit into small boxes. We adopted Nugget from our vet where he was abandoned by his owner after she boarded him for 6 long weeks! IN A CAGE...6 long weeks! Well, we brought Nugget home and he and our other cat immediately began a competitive eating contest.
Nuggets favorite things....string, boxes, packing peanuts and meals.

daydreamers

Today it hit 65%. AND SUNNY!
How can I possibly sit in the basement and "work"??
Keeping in mind I'm on several deadlines.

At 3:30, I decided I needed a mini vacation. No plane tickets, no reservations, just a rocking chair on my front porch, facing west, a glass (ok, a 16 oz. tumbler) of Chardonnay and my imagination.

This is HEAVEN. Really, this is HEAVEN.

On every single one of my grade school report cards, my teachers commented that I "DAYDREAM " too much. Well, ya know what, GOOD FOR ME!!!! Yes, I'm a dreamer, that's right! I don't deal in facts or figures or logic. I work entirely in the imaginative realm. Me and a whole bunch of other non-conformists.
This type of work is called "INNOVATION"....imagining the impossible....the absurb....the "we can never sell this"....I literally spend every day just making stuff up.

I have several creative friends who have agreed to doing some collabrative projects with me in 2008. This excites me to no end. I believe in the power of positive energy, of sharing, of creative (daydreamers) heads getting together to create new and wonderful projects! Teaming up with others who aren't afraid to explore new ideas, who don't feel threatened by an overlap of product categories. THIS IS WHEN THE GREAT STUFF HAPPENS!!!! 2008 is going to be a banner year, I can't wait to get going!

Happy Sunday...dream on!
