More Scoreboard fun with Sizzix and Eileen Hull's dies

I'm participating in a blog hop to show off the many ways of using my friend Eileen Hull's new product line with Sizzix! It's called SCOREBOARDS ™ and they are a  ton of fun to use because of their versatility. This week's projects are created around her pocket notebook die. (Shown here, as the base piece.)This came in handy when designing my purse sized color reference minibook.

I used the Sizzix/Eileen Hull's Scoreboard dies:

Brenda Pinnick Scrapper Keeper album (QVC.com) (now available only in the UK) papers and elements

I glued the smaller sized, Box with Flap onto the bigger Notebook die to create a place for stickynotes or other color reference. Here, I used a tag from my Scrapper Keeper kit and added some pretty ribbons.

I use these minibooks for color reference as I work. I build a color palette for each new collection of art and keep it filed with my print-offs, mock-ups, etc. You could use this for shopping, wardrobe building, crafting, designing...whatever you wish! 

I purchase paint fan books from different paint companies and cut them up to create my library of color swatches. I keep them sorted by color family, chroma and tints. It's so handy for experimenting with color and helps you get out of your color rut! (you know who you are...)  

Of course, I know you've already thought of a million more uses! So...get busy!

I'm crazy busy right now, getting ready for the biggest time of year in art licensing. Making art is only a fraction of what takes place in a professional studio. There's scanning, mock-ups, photos, marketing materials and press releases to be done. Trying to juggle everything at once has once again, gotten me frazzled! Of course, there's the holidays, too!!

I hope you're taking some time for relaxing during this busy time of year. Remember to feed your creative soul!

Sizzix Project!

I've been playing around with Eileen Hull's  new Scoreboard Sizzix Dies and found a great combo project!

I've been making these little mini-books using my own Sizzix product, Die Number 656042-Album cover and page. The mini-books are perfect for creating portable color palettes to stick in  your purse or bag for quick and easy reference. Shopping for new items can be stressful, so having a small reference book can make matching or coordinating your projects or wardrobe easier.

BPCU - week two!

Has a week gone by already??? Gheesh! Well, I was on a trip this last weekend, Houston to be exact. QUILT MARKET!!! What a wonderful show, so much energy, excitement, color, design and most of all,passion! I had the opportunity to catch up with some friends over long lunches and dinners and to meet and make some new ones along the way. It's hard to work by yourself, at home with no one to talk to except the cats! So when it's trade show time, it's always fun to meet up with people and talk in person.

Here's this week's color palette, still centered on Autumn hues. I've shown an example of using studio materials, in this case, embroidery skeins, to develop a palette. You don't need to have expensive color chips. Next week I'll show another source for gathering color inspiration and be tying it in with a project you can make using Sizzix dies.

Brenda Pinnick Color U!!!!

I was going to wait to announce this next week but decided I just couldn't keep it in any longer!!!

I'm so excited to announce my extension of my ongoing color palette series which will be featured weekly on When Creativity Knocks and here on my blog as well. I've given it a spiffy new name and look ...

And as in the past, my palettes will include some fabulous freebies as color exercises which can be used in your crafting projects. As a member of the Color Marketing Group, an international consortium of color experts, I also offer color workshops for businesses, personal spaces, any projects where color plays an important role. Which, in my opinion, is EVERYWHERE!

(with a link, please).  What better time to rev up a color series than now, when nature gives us such splendor. This is always when I miss Michigan, where I grew up. The deep, rich hues of the abundant trees as they turn, the Autumn vegetables, beets, squash...even the smell of burning leaves. Yep, I get homesick every single fall and then wham, as soon as it snows up north, I'm a Southern Peach again!

Costa Rican color palette

I had so much fun last week making color palettes from my walk! I think I may be on a mission to continue this with my various photos from all the traveling I’ve been doing the past couple of years. I especially love this photo of the sunrise in Costa Rica from my trip in July.

It’s funny how when you look at the photo, you see blue water. Our minds tell us what to see based on learned knowledge. This is where an artist’s eye must take over and learn to see what is actually there, not what we assume is there. In learning to really see, this is crucial and this exercise proves it. I used the eye-dropper tool (in Photoshop) set at 5×5 pixals to sample the water. I couldn’t find the color blue in the true state. The various greys leaned towards blues and purples but could not truly be called out as blue on their own.

I hope you’ll try this with your own photos, it’s a fun exercise and you will end up with some beautiful color palettes to use in your creative work.

Nature's Color Palettes

Don't you love this time of year? It has finally cooled off some here in Georgia and I went for a 4 mile walk this morning. It's just amazing the wonderful gifts that nature has for us if we only take the time to slow down long enough to see them. I took along my iphone and snapped some  pictures this morning before the sun came out from behind the clouds. This is the perfect time to see the beautiful and varied hues that dot the landscape. Because we're in the deep south, we don't get true Autumn color until mid to late October but a few types of trees and scrubs are showing some subtle changes.  I was especially intrigued with finding palettes within photo frames. Here is what I found and I've pulled out some of the hues from each picture to create a nature inspired color palette.

Wouldn't this palette be beautiful in a family room? It's cozy, rich and both warm and cool.

How about this for a bedroom? Calm, cool and relaxed.

This is probably the palette with the most variety. You can get away with this if you limit certain hues to a small amount, especially the bright yellow. (Like nature did here!)

I love this mix- especially the first purple and the brick red beneath it.

How about a den or study done with this palette? I especially love the cool grey in with the warm tones, it plays an important part in this palette, don't you think?

Color is so important in our everyday environment. I would re-paint my studio every single day if I could! Sometimes I hang a big piece of fabric in certain hues just because I crave that color. The last couple of days, I've been craving yellow. I happen to own some really nice Sizzix Dies that I'm going to be playing with tonight and we'll see what transpires!
